STATUE DE LA LIBERTÉ DE LUGNÉ

This replica of Liberty Enlightening the World was on the prow of the liner "Maxim's of the Seas" which in 1986 celebrated the centenary of the real statue in New York with show business stars on board. The shipowners decided some time later to disembark this cumbersome figurehead. So the captain of the ship, a certain Albert Abélanet, a native of Lugné, decided to save her from drowning, and that is how the beautiful Liberté welcomes visitors, who are astonished to find themselves in such good company in the square of this charming little hamlet.

Raoul Bayou, mayor of Cessenon, wanted to raise it above the hill of Cessenon but it became too expensive. At present, it rests on a base made of a stone recovered from a bridge on the Orb.
Our statue has just recovered its diadem that a vandal had destroyed. Commander Abélanet died in 2012.
