At the time of the industrial boom in Bédarieux, every middle-class family in the town felt duty-bound to open their upper floor apartments out onto the street, decorating them with superb balconies.
“See and be seen” was the motto of the time, and people spent a lot of time on their balconies, chatting with the neighbours.
